ABOUT BLACKHILLS CSA
A place to grow food, community, and connection
Blackhills CSA is a community-supported agriculture (CSA) initiative based in rural Swansea. We're committed to regenerative land practices, food resilience, and creating a thriving space for people and nature. Everything we do is rooted in permaculture ethics: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share.
Earth Care
Growing food in harmony with the land
At Blackhills CSA, we grow nutrient-dense, seasonal vegetables using regenerative, no-dig methods that enrich the soil, support biodiversity, and work in rhythm with natural systems. Our veg box scheme connects people to the land and the seasons, while helping restore local ecosystems.
We’re also caretakers of a beautiful and evolving landscape that includes:
-
A sensory garden designed for disabled access and wellbeing
-
A walking labyrinth, planted as land art and a space for reflection
-
Pollinator-friendly planting and living pathways that increase biodiversity
-
Every aspect of our growing space is designed not just to produce food but to heal land and people together.
People Care
A welcoming space for connection and wellbeing
Blackhills is a place to slow down, get your hands in the soil and feel part of something meaningful. We offer weekly volunteer days, seasonal workshops, and nature-based wellbeing sessions for all ages and abilities. Whether you're growing, making, relaxing or just being- you are welcome.
We also host:
-
Fermentation and food preservation workshops to reconnect with seasonal eating
-
A wood-fired sauna, available to hire to support health and relaxation
-
Activities that blend land-based learning with care, creativity, and community
-
We’re here to support connection- to the land, to each other and to ourselves.
Fair Share
Sharing the harvest, the skills, and the space
As a CSA, our members directly support the people growing their food- and in return receive a share of the harvest. This shared-risk model builds resilience and trust between farmers and community. We also offer a tiered style payment system so that people on a higher wage can pay-it-forward for people on a lower wage. But fair share goes beyond food.
At Blackhills we:
-
Keep our workshops low-cost or free to remove barriers to learning
-
Redistribute surplus through community food and preservation sessions
-
Offer meaningful volunteering opportunities for those seeking connection, skills or recovery
We believe everyone should have access to good food, green space, and community—and we’re building systems that make that possible.
